First, for the sake of moving forward, let’s accept it and admit that the PC was disrupted. It had a long run, but now there’s a better solution.
Let’s go through the four things Apple did with the iPad that made it so disruptive.
1. The iPad Focused on Media
The focus of desktop and laptop computers has always been on how fast they are and how fast they can run software. No matter what you do on a desktop or a laptop, you’re running software. So a faster processor, better graphics and more memory are what you want because those will determine how well the software runs.
Meanwhile, The focus of operating systems are on their features. During the launch of Apple’s newest version of OS X, Lion, Apple’s presentation focused on its new features such as: Full-screen apps, Resume, Versions, and Auto-save.
Where this trend breaks is with the iPad. When Apple revealed the iPad, they didn’t focus on any of that. Apple talked about what reading books, magazines and the news was like, how easy it was to download and watch movies, play video games, read or write email, and browse the Internet.
This was a fundamentally different approach and it’s important for two reasons:
- The focus was on the experiences the device enabled, not its specs or features.
- Users could immediately recognize and relate to those activities, and they were able to understand how the iPad improved them.
Watching YouTube isn’t a feature of Windows or OS X, it’s an experience you have. The Apple made that experience part of the iPad (and iPhone).
People did things on their computers, but their experiences came from media. The iPad brought those media experiences together.
2. The iPad Was Intuitive
The intuitiveness of the iPad is the best way to start talking about and understanding the “Post-PC” era.
To use a computer you need to know how to use a computer. It as true now as it was in the 60s. Our computers are a lot more powerful and prettier, but there’s nothing intuitive about them. If you want to do anything with a computer, you have to learn how to use one.
That doesn’t apply with the iPad. You can do everything you want on an iPad without that computer knowledge.
3. The iPad Abandoned Old Conventions
- Apple released a device without support for Flash even though it’s on 90%+ of PCs.
- iOS only lets you use one application at a time.
- Without any USB ports, an ethernet port, or optical drives the compatibility of the iPad to work with other devices was limited.
- Apple didn’t use a stylus while everyone said it’s too difficult to write without one.
Again and again, Apple blew away the conventions and the popular opinion of what a computer should be.
Apple didn’t just make a new Mac with a different form factor. They blew away what a computer could be.
4. The iPad Hardware Delivered The Experience
For a tablet to deliver a natural experience, it depends on quality hardware and software to work well together. Many failed attempts by competitors have shown that making a tablet with both and being able to sell it at a reasonable price isn’t easy.
The hardware and software need to work together in order to deliver a believable experience. If your ebook software mimics the appearance of a real bookshelf and of holding a paper book but then starts to lag when you try to read anything, then that experience is ruined. You’re no longer reading a book at that point, your just using a laggy computer.

There are no different segments for tablets. There’s one type of tablet people want. Ones that deliver exceptional and responsive media experiences. Cheaper tablets won’t work because they won’t be able to meet the requirements that are necessary to deliver that experience.
- You need the right quality display
- You need to use the right materials so the tablet doesn’t feel cheap in your hands and won’t break
- You need to powerful enough hardware and well engineered software that ensures responsive interactions
- You need a long lasting battery
- You need a software platform that enables third party developers
There are no segments to the tablet market, there are just degrees to which you can deliver on all of the above. As long as other companies continue to make compromise with their tablets, the iPad will reign.

Steve Jobs said this was going to happen.
Jobs said the day is coming when only one out of every few people will need a traditional computer.

Other companies will argue this, they’ll try to negotiate and make compromises between the two. Hopefully the points above have explained the reasons for the change, and why computing can never go back to being based on compromises.
